Timbuk2 Singapore – It Was Never About Bags

by Starry

May 12 2021

It was the year 1989. Rob Honeycutt, the founder of Timbuk2 Singapore, started off as a freethinking, freewheeling bike messenger in San Francisco. He fell in love with the messenger bag’s versatility and utility and wanted it to be available to all. The Classic Messenger Bag was born in the heart of San Francisco’s diverse Mission District neighbourhood. But it was never really about the bags; rather, it was about what the messenger bag allowed. A new group of urban nomads arose, navigating the turmoil with ease, pivoting from meetings to meetups, and outsmarting the city’s obstacles.

30 YEARS OF URBAN PROGRESS

What began in a San Francisco garage in 1989 has grown into a global culture of nomads, risk-takers, thinkers, and doers. Discover how we got here and what the future holds by exploring our storey.

THE MISSION DISTRICT IN 1989

Rob Honeycutt, a bicycle messenger in San Francisco, owns a sewing machine and makes his first messenger bag in his Mission District shop. Scumbags is the name he gives to his operation.

The Year 1990 THIS IS NOT THE BAND

Rob adopts the moniker Timbuk2 in honour of Timbuktu, an African capital, and his favourite band, Timbuk3. The first wholesale order for Timbuk2 Singapore bags is placed by the Bike Gallery in Portland, Oregon.

THE SWIRL IN 1991

Rob doodles the original Timbuk2 “swirl” design on a cocktail napkin with a felt-tip marker. Timbuk2 Singapore moves out of Rob’s garage and opens a store on Dore Street in the SOMA District of San Francisco.

AWARD-WINNING IN 2000

On timbuk2.com, Timbuk2 Singapore debuts the award-winning online Bag Builder, the first of its kind. Fans from all over the world will now create their own one-of-a-kind bag!

2019

Timbuk2 Singapore is celebrating its 30th anniversary. What began with custom messenger bags in a garage in the Mission District has grown into a multinational company that includes backpacks, travel bags, bike accessories, and, of course, the messenger bag. Here’s to another 30 years of progress!

We Take Our Responsibility To The Town in Person

This is where we call home. This is where we make things. Here, we compost. We care and are dedicated to urban development. Since 2014, ZERO Timbuk2 Singapore bags have been sent to landfills thanks to the services mentioned below, and thousands of bags have been repaired or repurposed. We are serious about our commitments.

Guaranteed for life

Timbuk2 Singapore goods are designed to last, and we stand by our iconic reputation. It all begins with uncompromising craftsmanship and sourcing sustainably manufactured fabrics from Bluesign® accredited mills that have undergone rigorous durability testing. Timbuk2 goods are designed to last a lifetime, and we stand behind them the whole way.

Sewn in San Francisco | California

We’ve been committed to making our custom-built bags in San Francisco since 1989. We love the sound of sewing machines, and we embrace local workers, their families, and San Francisco as a whole with great pride. Manufacturing locally guarantees high quality and safer working practises, as well as assisting us in moving toward a more competitive economic model by drastically reducing CO2 emissions.

Break Up With Your Bag: Recycle

Break Up With Your Wallet, a Timbuk2 campaign introduced in 2006, encourages lifelong Timbuk2 consumers to donate their used bag to anyone in need rather than throwing it away. The initiative has expanded over time to include donation members in communities throughout the United States and Canada. More than 15,000 bags have been donated in our cities as a result of these contributions. Drop off your unused Timbuk2 Singapore bag at a Timbuk2 store or click here to join.

The Partnership for Renewal Workshops (Renew)

We take your bag to our affiliate The Renewal Workshop when it’s beyond washing, restoration, or donation, and they’ll make it practically fabulous again for its next life. Anything that can’t be repaired is upcycled or used as a recycling feedstock.
